Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) is a professional association representing over 3,300 veterinarians in the Province of Ontario, working in private practice, government, academia, industry and public service. The OVMA focuses its efforts on the areas of economic research, continuing education and professional development, public relations and government relations.
Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) is the national voice for the veterinary profession dedicated to serving and representing the veterinarians of Canada. The Association is committed to excellence within the profession and to the well-being of animals. It promotes public awareness of the contribution of animals and veterinarians to society.
Ontario SPCA The Ontario SPCA (Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) provides care and shelter to tens of thousands of animals each year. For over a century the Ontario SPCA has provided province-wide leadership on matters relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals and the promotion of animal welfare, and to encourage humane and suitable animal care; call attention to unacceptable practices that harm animals; investigate cruelty complaints; carry out rescues; bring perpetrators of cruelty to court; advocate for humane laws; and provide care to all animals in need. The Ontario SPCA website is full of great resources for pet owners, including adoption information and tips on behaviour and training.
The College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) regulates the practice of veterinary medicine in Ontario to protect the public interest. While the CVO is not a school or university, the organization licenses veterinarians, inspects and accredits veterinary facilities and investigates complaints against veterinarians. It is the Veterinary regulatory and licensing board for Ontario.
Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians Veterinary Technicians are specifically trained professionals who work as an integral part of the veterinary medical team, to provide humane quality animal health care. Their education provides them with the theory and practical skills essential to their career choice. The OAVT is an advocacy group for the Veterinary Technicians of Ontario.
ASPCA Poison Control This is an excellent online resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center provides a helpful quick reference list of common plants that are known to be poisonous to pets. It also provides further information regarding symptoms and the degree of toxicity.
