Adopting A Rescue Dog

May 15, 2023

May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! Giving a rescue dog a second chance can be very fulfilling and enriching. Read on as a local Burlington, ON vet offers some advice on adopting a rescue dog.

Do Your Research

This applies in several areas. If you’re considering adopting a rescue that is a specific breed, read up on that breed. You’ll also want to find out as much as you can about Fido’s backstory.

Be Committed

Going to a new home is always a big and scary change for Fido. It would be both sad and traumatic for him to get adopted, only to be returned. Make sure you’re ready, willing, and able to make a forever promise!

Petproof Everything

Even if your last dog had no interest in eating your phone, that doesn’t mean your new pet won’t. Be super diligent about petproofing. Remove or secure anything that isn’t safe for him to eat, chew, or play with. That list includes anything small or sharp; plastic bags and ties; ropes and cords; chemicals; medicine; toxic plants; and personal items, such as clothing, shoes, and purses.

Yard Check

Fido would love to have a yard to run and play in. If your fence isn’t secure or tall enough, you can use deer fencing or poultry fencing to strengthen it. You’ll want to make sure there are no toxic plants around. Check the ASPCA site here for more information.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Fido may have some phobias, trauma, or bad habits to work on. He may also need some training. Focus on positive reinforcement by rewarding him for good behavior. Don’t be shy about asking your vet or a dog behaviorist for advice. It could make a huge difference!

Contact The Vet

One of the first things on your agenda should be introducing your pooch to his new doctor. This is also a great chance for getting specific care tips!

Getting Settled

Your canine pal will need time to get used to his new place. Generally, dogs need about three days to get the lay of the land, three weeks to adjust, and three months to really feel at home. Offer Fido a quiet, comfy spot where he can relax, and work on winning, not forcing, his love and loyalty.
