Adopting A Senior Dog

November 1, 2023

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! There’s certainly no bad time to adopt an older animal: dogs and cats in their golden years make wonderful pets, but are often overlooked in shelters, as so many people go for kittens and puppies. Senior dogs are very cute, sweet, and lovable, and their calm demeanors and low exercise needs make them great matches for many homes. A Burlington, ON vet offers some advice on adopting a senior pooch in this article.

Prepare For Fido

Getting things ready for a senior dog is a bit different from puppyproofing. Chances are, Fido will be well past his chewing and destructive stages, but he’ll never entirely outgrow the urge for mischief. Keep anything that could be dangerous out of paws’ reach. You may want to focus on providing good footing and helping Fido get around more easily. Set out carpet runners and nightlights, and block off potentially-dangerous areas, such as fireplaces and pools. Comfy beds are also a must. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Be Ready To Commit

Just like people, dogs become prone to certain health conditions as they age. Be ready to provide your canine pal with the love, attention, and medical care he needs. Adoption is forever!

Give The Pup Time

Going to a new home is a big change for any dog, but can be particularly challenging for older ones. Fido may still be missing his previous owner, and may not really understand what happened. He may also sleep a lot at first, as he recuperates from the shelter environment. Give him time to get used to his new surroundings.

Get A Doggy DNA Test

Doggy DNA tests aren’t just good for figuring out who’ll win the bet about Fido’s breed makeup. It’s also helpful for health reasons. Different breeds can be prone to certain health conditions. For instance, Great Danes and German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia. Finding out what breed or breeds your canine buddy is can be very helpful in identifying any potential health issues he may have elevated risks of developing.

Savor The Time

Older dogs have some very unique and special characteristics. They’re usually super sweet and affectionate, and really just want someone to love them. You may find that your heart absolutely melts when you look into Fido’s soulful eyes. Enjoy this special time you have with your furry pal.
