Ways To Keep Your Pet Healthy

August 1, 2023

Our animal companions are truly wonderful gifts. Fido and Fluffy keep us smiling, provide us with love and entertainment, and generally complete our lives and households. Your furry friend depends on you to take care of them, and to provide them with everything they need to stay happy and healthy. A local Burlington, ON vet offers some advice on this below.

Parasite Control

This is one of the simplest things you can do for your furry friend … and also one of the most important. Fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and other parasites carry dangerous diseases, and can severely compromise your pet’s health. Some, such as heartworm, can even be fatal. Keep up with Fluffy and Fido’s preventative care!

Proper Diet

Obesity is a huge problem—literally—among our furry companions. More that fifty percent of our canine friends and over sixty percent of our feline buddies are overweight or obese. It may be hard to resist that furry face, but you aren’t doing your four-legged pal any favors by overfeeding them. Offer a high-quality food, and stick to recommended portion sizes.

Exercise/Stimulation

Fluffy and Fido are certainly fond of their naps, but they can’t sleep all the time. If you have a dog, you’ll need to walk and play with Fido daily. Playing is also beneficial for our feline friends. Offer your kitty lots of toys, and make tie to hold that laser pointer for her. Kitties will also benefit from having piece of furniture to explore, such as cat towers.

Veterinary Care

It’s important to keep up with your pet’s veterinary care needs. Our four-legged pals can’t tell us if something is wrong! We recommend having Fluffy and Fido examined at least once a year. In between visits, keep an eye out for potential signs of illness. Call us right away if you notice anything unusual.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

If your pet hasn’t been fixed yet, we strongly recommend making this appointment as soon as possible. Not only will you help prevent unwanted litters from adding to the ever-growing numbers of homeless pets, your furry pal will also be calmer, healthier, and less inclined to certain undesired behaviors, such as spraying and yowling.

Safety

Taking small but smart precautions can go a long way towards preventing injuries and mishaps. Petproofing is one example of this. You’ll also need to keep Fido leashed when he isn’t in fenced areas. As for Fluffy, she’s better off inside. Ask your vet for more information.
