Summer Care For Exotics

June 1, 2023

With summer around the corner, pet owners will need to make a few adjustments to their furry friends’ care needs. Although Ontario isn’t generally known for scorching summers, that only makes the heat waves we do get—such as the current one—even more dangerous, as pets just aren’t equipped for it. A local Aldershot, ON vet offers some advice on caring for exotics in this article.

Cages

If your animal companion’s cage is in direct sunlight, you’ll want to move it to a different spot, or close blinds or drapes. You’ll also need to monitor temperatures inside the cage.

Keeping Them Cool

There are also a few things you can do to keep your tiny pal’s cage cool and comfy in the heat. Pointing a fan at or above the cage can help. You just don’t want the air flow pointed directly at your pet. You can also freeze bottles of water and place them around the cage, or freeze a ceramic tile for your little buddy to lay on.

Cold Snacks

Who doesn’t enjoy a frozen snack on a sweltering day? Your furry pal may like chilled fruits or veggies, while some may want to gnaw on ice cubes. The exact options will depend on what kind of pet you have, so stick with things that you’re certain are safe. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Cleaning

Since insects are more prevalent in summer, you’ll need to be extra diligent about removing waste and uneaten food from your pet’s cage. You may need to do more frequent deep cleans as well.

Grooming

Exotics may need extra attention in this area as well. If your little buddy enjoys dust baths, consider keeping the dust in a fridge. Pets that take water baths may enjoy extra soak time. Check with your vet, though: overbathing could dry your pet’s fur out.

Overheating

Keep a close eye on your pet, and watch for signs that they are getting too hot. Exact ones vary from pet to pet, but some common ones include listlessness, panting, lethargy, and discolored ears, paws, or gums. If you notice any of these red flags, immediately take steps to cool your cute pet off, and then contact your vet for further instructions.
