Spotlight On The Royal Dogs

May 1, 2023

King Charles III’s Coronation is this week. Whether you watch the royals avidly, or couldn’t care less, you may find it hard not to be charmed by their pampered pets. As it turns out, each branch of the royal family usually picks a favorite breed and pretty much sticks with it. A Burlington, ON vet lists some of those lucky pooches in this article.

Jack Russell Terriers

These plucky little terriers just got a huge social boost: they are Charles and Camilla’s favorite breed. The soon-to-be-crowned monarch and queen consort already have at least two devout supporters: their two furry pals, named Beth and Bluebell. Camilla adopted them from a shelter in 2017, and has been pampering them ever since. The future queen consort commented about the pups, saying. “The nice thing about dogs is you can sit them down, you could have a nice long conversation, you could be cross, you could be sad, and they just sit looking at you, wagging their tail.” Well said! (Or, to put it in a more British way, bloody well said.)

Cocker Spaniels

Prince William and Kate Middleton recently welcomed a furry new family member into their home: a Cocker Spaniel, Orla. The pup stepped into the pawprints of the royal couple’s first cocker Spaniel, Lupo, Orla’s aunt. Sadly, Lupo crossed the Rainbow Bridge back in 2020.

Bull Terriers

Princess Anne also has a favorite breed: the bull terrier. Unfortunately, her pups seem to need training and/or behavioral counseling. One of her pooches, Dotty, attacked two children in Hyde Park in 2002. Then, in 2003, her other dog, Florence, unfortunately killed one of the queen’s beloved corgis.

Corgis

We can’t possibly discuss the royal dogs without mentioning Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved corgis. Apparently Princess Diana wasn’t much of a fan, as she once referred to them as a moving carpet. However, the majority of the populace was very much charmed by the adorable, smart pups. The Queen stopped purchasing and breeding the dogs a few years before her death, as she didn’t want to leave pets behind. She did end up leaving three pooches: two Corgis and a Dorgi (Corgi/Dachshund mix), who are now in the care of Prince Andrew.
