Tips For Adopting A Rabbit

April 1, 2023

Easter is coming up, and that means rabbits are going to be in the spotlight for the next few weeks. Bunnies are almost impossibly cute, and they can make great pets. However, that doesn’t mean that they are going to be the right choice for every home. A local Burlington, ON veterinarian offers some advice on bringing Floppy into the family below.

Do Your Research

There’s a lot more to bunny care than just filling Floppy’s bowl. It’s important to understand the basics of bunny behavior. For instance, rabbits are quite timid, and are easily scared. They also need to be handled very gently. Take time to learn about your furry pal before introducing her into your household. Ask your vet for specific care advice.

Bunnyproof Carefully

Floppy will need plenty of free time out of her cage. You’ll need to make some adjustments to make your home safe for your little furball. That means making sure that she can’t get to anything that is unsafe for her to chew on, such as wires, furniture legs, toxic items, and anything small, sharp, or stringy. You’ll also need to provide plenty of suitable chew toys.

Consider Breed

Breed definitely plays a role in Floppy’s care needs. For instance, longhaired rabbits, such as Angoras, need to be brushed daily. This can also be a factor in your cute pet’s size and personality.

FInd A Good Vet

Rabbits are very different from dogs and cats. You’ll need to find a vet that is experienced with Floppy. This can also be a great source of information and advice about bunny care tips.

Be Ready To Commit

Unfortunately, it’s all too common for people to adopt bunnies as Easter gifts, often without much foresight or research. Without proper care, bunnies get very sick, very quickly. Many people also don’t realize that these guys are tiny, adorable chewing machines. The end result here, sadly, is that many of those cute rabbits will soon be rehomed, or worse, released into the wild. There’s nothing wrong with adopting Floppy at Easter, but it’s not something you should do on a whim. Bunnies are living beings, and they need a lot of love and care. Don’t move forward unless you’re 100 percent ready for that commitment. Adoption is forever!
