Peanut Butter Day

March 1, 2023

It’s National Peanut Butter Lovers Day! Do you like peanut butter? We’re pretty enthusiastic about it over here … as are many of our canine patients. While giving your dog peanut butter isn’t exactly rocket science, there are some things you should know. A Burlington, ON vet discusses the ‘nuts and bolts’ of giving Fido PB in this article.

Healthy … Or Not?

Peanut butter, in and of itself, is actually packed with both nutrients and calories. On the plus side, the delicious spread is loaded with vitamins and healthy fats. However, it also packs a caloric wallop. There are 188 calories in just two tablespoons! Don’t go overboard. Even giving Fido a tablespoon or two a day can cause him to pack on pounds.

Uses

Peanut butter may be one of the most useful treats you can give your canine companion. It works well with pill pockets, which can be a lifesaver for anyone trying to give their pups pills. It can also be used as stuffing in Kong toys and other similar playthings. Some people even use it as a distraction, and give their furry friends some PB while they’re getting a bath or pawdicure. Consult your vet before trying this—or any other—viral pet care hack.

Choosing Brands

We always recommend reading labels on anything you give to your pet. Peanut butter is no exception! Many brands contain something called xylitol, which is safe for us humans but toxic to dogs. Xylitol is found in many processed foods, particularly baked goods, such as candies, gum, and cakes. Don’t give Fido any PB that contains xylitol.

Recipes

Do you like cooking? You can actually try making your canine pal some peanut butter goodies. For instance, you can make your furry buddy some doggy ice cream by combining natural peanut butter with ripe bananas and/or pureed pumpkin. Use a blender or food processor to mix it, and then divide into snack-sized servings and freeze overnight. You can also make your pooch some PB cookies. Mix natural PB with pureed pumpkin, whole-wheat flour, an egg, and a little water. Divide into small portions, or pour into a brownie tray. Start with about 15 minutes at 350, and add more time if needed. Don’t forget to make Fido do a trick for his treat!
