6 Great Reasons To Adopt A Mutt

December 1, 2022
Did you know that December 2nd is National Mutt Day? We’re all-in on this doggy celebration. Many of our favorite patients are mutts! In fact, between 51 and 54 percent of our canine pals are mixed breeds. In this article, a Burlington, ON vet lists some reasons to adopt a mutt.

Unique Pup

One of the best things about mutts is the fact that they’re all unique. Fido may clearly resemble a cross between two breeds, or he may have mixed-and-matched traits from several different pups. (Tip: if you’re really curious, you can get a doggy DNA test done.)

A Hardy Pet

You may have heard that mutts are often healthier than purebreds. There is some truth to this. Because purebred dogs all come from the same gene pools, they can be prone to developing specific health issues. Mutts have a wider gene pool, which often does result in a hardier, healthier pooch. However, every dog is unique.

Save Money

We understand how people can develop preferences for specific breeds. There’s nothing wrong with that! However, buying a purebred pooch can cost hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. Mutts are much more affordable. More money for toys and treats!

Support Animal Welfare

While there definitely are great breeders out there, unfortunately there are also many puppy mill owners who value only profit and cruelly mistreat their dogs. When you get a mutt, you’ll know that you aren’t lining the pockets of someone who sees pets as dollar signs. Plus, if you get Fido from a shelter, you’ll also be freeing up space and resources that the shelter can then use to help other homeless pets.

Custom Match

Do you want a pooch of a specific size or color, or one that is good with cats? Shelters are filled with adorable candidates! No matter what traits you’re looking for, you’ll find a cute canine out there that fits the bill.

Save A Life

The majority of dogs in shelters—as many as 75%—are actually mutts. While many shelters are going no-kill, this unfortunately isn’t a universal practice. Fido may only have a limited amount of time to find a home. There’s something very special and beautiful about giving a sweet dog a second chance at happiness.
