Summer Pocket Pet Care

July 1, 2022
Do you have a pint-sized pet, such as a bunny, Guinea pig, gerbil, or hamsters? These little balls of fur are super cute! Here, a Burlington, ON veterinarian offers some advice on keeping pocket pets comfortable, healthy, and safe this summer.

Offer Cool Treats

Who doesn’t like a cool snack in summer? Many pocket pets can enjoy small amounts of special treats, such as frozen fruits or perhaps some cucumber. Just take care to only offer things that are safe for your particular pet.

Provide Extra Water

One of the best things you can do is make sure that your furry friend always has clean water. It’s a good idea to get a couple extra water bottles. Keep an extra one in your pet’s cage, and one in the freezer. The frozen one will provide cold water as it melts. When it’s melted and warmed up to room temperature, swap them out again.

Make The Cage Comfy

You’ll need to make sure that your little buddy’s room stays at an appropriate temperature. You’ll need to keep an eye on the thermometer. Some pets can overheat any time the temperature goes above 80F, which many people consider a comfortable summer room temperature. There are things you can do to cool the cage down. If it’s off the ground, put a bucket or cooler of ice beneath it. You can also offer frozen cement tiles or ceramic pots to your pet to hang out on (or in).

Be Careful With Exercise Wheels

Exercise wheels can be a lot of fun for some pets. However, you don’t want to use them in hot rooms or in sunny areas. Your furry pal could quickly overheat!

Watch For Distress

Keep a close eye on your tiny furball, and watch for signs of distress. Each type of pet is going to have their own specific red flags, but there are a few common ones, such as panting, lethargy, drooling, and restlessness. If you know or suspect that your little buddy is too hot, take immediate steps to cool them down and call your vet. One option is to hold them in front of an open freezer. You can also offer a little water, but don’t give cold water or too much. Your vet can give specific instructions. As your Burlington, ON animal clinic, we’re dedicated to offering top-notch care.
