Autumn To-Do List For Dog Owners

October 1, 2021

Autumn is officially here! Many people get quite busy with seasonal preparations at this time of year. In addition to getting all of those fall decorations up, there’s also plenty to do to prepare for winter. If you have a dog, you’ll want to add a few pet-specific things to your list as well. A Burlington, ON vet lists some of them below.

Wardrobe Check

If Fido has thin fur, he’ll need some extra insulation from the cold. This is the time to pull his things out of storage. Make sure everything is clean and still fits well. If you like sewing, you can actually make a few sweaters for your four-legged friend. Look online for patterns.

Take A Walk

October’s weather is absolutely perfect for walking Fido. Take advantage of those cool, clear days! Grab your pooch, some coffee, and explore some of our beautiful local parks.

Online Shopping

You may need to pick up a few things before the snow flies. If your pup’s bed is looking old and thin, get him a new one. It’s important for Fido to be able to sleep comfortably! You may also need to stock up on paw wax and pet-safe de-icing products. Thin-coated dogs, puppies, and senior dogs may also appreciate thermal blankets.

Doghouse Prep

We can’t state this enough: dogs should live indoors with the rest of the family. That said, Man’s Best Buddy does like having a spot of his own outdoors. If your furry buddy has a doghouse, make sure that it’s well insulated and ready for winter.

Revisit The Menu

Some dogs need larger portion sizes in cold weather. Fido may also benefit from certain supplements, such as fish oil, especially if he gets very stiff and sore. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Parasite Control

Parasites like fleas and ticks don’t entirely go away when it gets cold. Actually, many of them will try to get inside. Keep up with your canine pal’s preventative care.

Baths

Many of our canine patients don’t get bathed as much in winter as they do in summer. Before the temperatures drop, give Fido a good bath or take him to the salon. Your furry friend will be both warmer and more comfortable with a soft, clean coat.
