Playing With a Senior Cat

August 1, 2021

Is your feline pal starting to slow down a bit? Perhaps Fluffy is napping even more than she used to, and is becoming more interested in meditating than in pouncing on her toys. It’s normal for pets to slow down as they age: after all, we do the same thing. However, your kitty will still benefit from regular play sessions as she gets older. A local Burlington, ON vet discusses playing with your aging furball in this article.

 Benefits

Playing is of course lots of fun for Fluffy: it lets her indulge in her natural hunting behaviors, and gives her a chance to unleash her inner lioness. Kitties also find it fascinating and challenging to try and ‘catch’ things that mimic the types of critters they would hunt in the wild. Plus, playing helps your feline buddy stay in shape physically. It also offers her beneficial mental stimulation. This is extremely important to your furball as she ages, as it can help keep her mind sharp.

Toys

Kitties all have their own unique tastes in toys. As Fluffy grows older, her preferences may change a bit. She may start to prefer playthings that squeak or light up, as they’re easier to track. Senior cats also often become less sensitive to catnip. Try a few different things, and see what your furry friend likes.

Activity Levels

You don’t have to worry about over-exhausting your furry pal. While dogs will push themselves to please their humans, Fluffy isn’t really worried about making you happy. When she gets even the slightest bit tired, she’ll just quit playing. In fact, she may tap out after just a few minutes. That’s purrfectly fine!

Concerns

There are a few things to be careful of. Don’t play with Fluffy near potential hazards, like stairs or fireplaces. It’s also a good idea to keep her at ground level. Play with your furry buddy on soft surfaces, like carpets, so she has good traction, and won’t hurt herself.

Consistency

Cats tend to thrive when they are kept on a steady schedule. Try to play with your kitty every day, at roughly the same time. Keep a few cat toys near the chair or sofa you like to relax in, and incorporate Fluffy’s play sessions into your TV time.
