Ways to Fight Fleas

July 1, 2021

Do you like summer? Although many of us enjoy winter sports, there’s also a lot to be said for warm weather. Of course, we’re not the only ones who enjoy this time of year. Many of our patients are definitely enjoying these sunny days … as do fleas, ticks, and other critters. As you know, these pests carry dangerous diseases, and can make both people and pets very sick. A local Burlington, ON vet lists some ways to fight fleas below.

 Parasite Control

This probably won’t be much of a surprise. Keeping up with your fuzzy pal’s parasite control products is crucial at this time of year! There are many different types to choose from these days, so ask your vet for recommendations and options. You may want to set yourself reminders, so you don’t forget a dose.

Lawn Care

Fleas and ticks both like to lurk in tall grasses and shady areas. Mowing your lawn regularly will help deter them. In addition to keeping your yard mowed, you’ll also want to keep your property neat and clean. Pick up piles of debris, such as dead branches, and keep brush and plants trimmed back. Don’t put birdfeeders too close to your house, as wild birds can also carry parasites. If deer, turkey, or other wild animals sometimes visit, consider installing some deer fencing to deter them.

Cleaning

Keeping your house clean is also effective. Just dusting and vacuuming will help quite a bit. Fleas often hide in nooks and crannies, so remember to dust and vacuum things like window sills, door jambs, and baseboards. If you’re fighting an active infestation, vacuum daily. When you’re done, immediately empty the canister into a plastic bag, then seal the bag and take it outside. This will stop any eggs from hatching inside the vacuum and crawling out into your house. A thorough steam cleaning will help as well. (Note: a good steam cleaner is also just a sound investment for anyone with pets, especially dogs.) Wash your pet’s bedding at least every other week, using hot water and unscented detergent. If possible, dry it in the dryer on high heat. Keeping clothing up off the floor will also help. Every little bit helps!
