Keeping an Exotic Pet Healthy

April 15, 2021

Exotic pets a re becoming quite popular. There’s a lot of appeal to having a pet that is not only beautiful or cute, but also fairly unique. However, these less common pets often have very specific needs. While each of them is different, there are some general rules of thumb to follow when it comes to keeping them healthy. A Burlington, ON vet lists some of them below.

Proper Habitat

Making sure that your pet has a suitable tank, cage, or enclosure may be half the battle here. This is one area where bigger is almost always better. Get the largest cage you can fit or afford. Ask your vet for advice on things like substrate, hiding holes, and accessories. Keeping the cage clean is also important.

Climate Control

While some pets are more sensitive to heat and humidity levels than others, most exotics must be kept within specific ranges. Even hamsters can get very sick if they get too cold! If you need to get special equipment, choose high-quality products, even if they cost a bit more. You’ll also need to monitor conditions closely.

Research

Do lots of research, and learn how to properly care for your new pet. Many pet stores will offer some basic advice or a care sheet. This is helpful, but it’s really just a start. Get some books or magazines, and check out some dedicated forums or videos.

Good Diet

No matter what type of pet you have, making sure they’re getting good nutrition is absolutely crucial. Exotic pets often have very specific needs. You’ll also need to be vigilant about some of the commercial foods marketed towards exotics, particularly treats. Find out exactly what your pet needs before you go shopping.

Careful Monitoring

Part of keeping pets healthy is paying attention to them, and watching for signs of illness. Keep a close eye on your animal friend, and really get to know what is and isn’t normal for them.

Great Vet

Last but certainly not least, you’ll need a great vet, one who is experienced in caring for the type of pet you’re getting. This is another great source of information. Don’t be shy about asking for specific tips on things like diet, care, and handling. That’s why we’re here!
