Bunnyproofing 101

January 15, 2021

Have you recently adopted a bunny? If so, you’ve got a super cute pet on your hands! Floppy isn’t quite as innocent as she looks, however. In fact, your little ball of fur is a chewing machine! In order to protect both your rabbit and your property, you’ll need to take some steps to make your home safe for her. A local Burlington, ON vet lists some helpful tips on bunnyproofing below.

Ropes And Cords

Wires and cords are very tempting and very dangerous for bunnies. Floppy could get seriously hurt, or even start a fire, by chewing on a live wire. (She’s also ruined her fair share of electronics.) Keep cords in spots your furry buddy can’t reach, or use protective coverings on them.

Baseboards And Furniture Legs

Baseboards and furniture legs are both prime targets for your adorable little pet. You can get protective coverings for them, or treat them with taste deterrents.

Holes And Gaps

Rabbits are pretty small, and they can easily fit into tight spaces. Floppy loves to get beneath beds and sofa and nibble at the bottom boards and upholstery. She can also get into some mischief behind counters and cabinets! You’ll want to seal off openings behind and beneath furniture and cabinets.

Toxic Plants

Plants are a big concern here, as they are rabbits’ main food source in the wild. Make sure your home only contains ones that are safe for your furball. Some of the poisonous ones include lilies, foxglove, azaleas, pine, and bulbed plants, such as daffodils. Ask your vet for more information.

Plastics

Anything plastic is a potential danger. Plastics can choke playful pets, and can cause serious internal injuries if swallowed. Keep things like plastic bags, ties, and wrappers out of paws reach.

Personal Items

One rule of thumb we suggest all bunny owners follow? Keep closet doors closed. Personal items like shoes, bags, and storage boxes are a treasure trove for Floppy! Your furry pal could try to chew the door, so you may want to put protective coverings on it.

Other Hazards

This is just a partial list of things you’d want to address. Other potential dangers include toxic chemicals, medications, unsafe foods, and anything small or sharp. Ask your vet for more information on bunnyproofing.
