Getting Your Dog a Squeaky Toy

October 15, 2020

Oct. 28th is Plush Animal Lovers’ Day! Does your dog adore his plush toys? Fido is pretty adorable when he’s running after a toy he loves. But there are a few things to remember when it comes to giving your dog squeaky toys. Below, your local vet offers some tips on choosing your pooch’s toys.

Discarding Old Toys

Squeaky toys are not the most long-lasting toys out there. And some dogs make pretty short work of them! Pay attention to the condition of Fido’s toys and repair or get rid of old, tattered ones. Remember to distract your pet by giving him a new toy while you do this!

Rotate

Variety is the spice of life, they say. Rotate your furry pal’s toys out regularly so that he doesn’t get bored. Pro tip: do this when Fido is asleep or outdoors.

Cleaning

Squeaky toys can get gross pretty quickly. Wash your furry pal’s toys on a regular basis. Toys that are in good condition can usually be washed in the machine, but it’s a good idea to check the instructions on the label to be sure.

Prey Drive

Some experts have concerns about squeaky toys and a dog’s prey drive. Many dogs are just hardwired to go after small critters. That squeak, to your pup, sounds like something his ancestors would hunt in the fields. If you know or suspect that your canine buddy has a strong prey drive, ask your veterinary professional about the right approach to playtime.

Material

A toy’s material is also something to consider. Always look at a toy’s labels, and choose products that use non-toxic materials.

Squeakers

You’re probably aware that some dogs have a tendency to eat the squeakers in squeaky toys. Of course, this can be dangerous. Squeakers can cause intestinal blockages, which can be very dangerous. If your dog eats squeakers, you might be better off choosing a different kind of toy. If you aren’t sure how your pooch will react, supervise playtime closely!

Benefits

Squeaky toys can be quite useful. They come in handy if you’re trying to get your dog’s attention for a photograph, for example. They’re also good for senior dogs as they’re soft on the mouth.
