Hiding a Litterbox

September 1, 2020

Litterboxes definitely make caring for cats easier. You won’t have to rush home to walk Fluffy, as you would a dog. However, your kitty’s purrsonal powder room really isn’t going to do much for your décor. We can help! Here, a Burlington, ON vet lists some ways to disguise your feline friend’s bathroom.

End Table

Get an end table with legs, and drape some fabric over it. You can slide the litterbox beneath it. You can add some pet-safe plants on the table, to help keep the air clean. You can find a list of non-toxic plants at the ASPCA website here .

Upcycle Furniture

For this one, you’ll want a solid piece of furniture. It can be an end table with doors, a chest, or even a buffet. Cut a hole in the side for your kitty to get in and out through. Use the existing doors for cleaning access.

Folding Screen

Another option is to get a pretty folding screen, or even a small room divider. Set it up so that your furball can easily get in and out.

Closet Redo

If you own your own home, you may want to give your cat her own closet, and put the litterbox in that. Cut a pet door for Fluffy. You can still use the closet for storing things: install some shelves above the box, and keep things like cleaning supplies in there.

Storage Tote

Want a simpler solution? Get a large plastic storage tub, and cut a hole in one side. Use that as the litterbox! You can make it look nicer by decorating it with paint, stencils, contact paper, or even stickers.

Custom Pieces

Did you know that you can find pieces made specifically for Fluffy? These will likely be more expensive than the other options, but they are both functional and attractive, and should last quite a long time. Some look like furniture, while others are cleverly disguised to look like large plant pots. Look online for options.

Tips

No matter what option you choose, make sure your kitty’s bathroom is in a spot that is easy to access but offers her some privacy. Also, be sure to keep the box clean! We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week.
