The coronavirus has affected almost every aspect of our lives in a few short months. Since the pandemic began, many of our canine patients have been thrilled to find their humans staying home more often. Although restrictions are lifting in some places, it’s likely safe to say that it will be some time before social distancing becomes a thing of the past. At least in summer, you can take your pooch for a walk and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. How do you social distance with dogs? A Burlington, ON vet offers some tips on this below.

Walking your dog is a great way to get outdoors. This is a chance for you to get some fresh air and sunshine, and give your canine buddy his daily workout. Just avoid crowded trails or dog parks. It can get a bit tricky when Fido runs into one of his buddies. It’s not the worst thing in the world if your pet sniffs another pooch, but try to avoid this if you can. It’s also best not to let your pup run around gathering ear scritches and belly rubs right now. While there have only been a handful of cases of pets actually getting infected, if someone who has the virus pets them, it could live on their fur. Also, always wash your hands thoroughly after bringing your furry friend in, especially if you’ve touched rails, gates, or anything else others may have come into contact with.

You can’t control what happens outside your home. However, by having a dog or cat in your life, you’re definitely making your home better and more fun. If your budget and schedule will allow for it, consider adopting a pet. Staying home gives you plenty of time for training. One thing we know for sure: quarantines are much better with pets!
