Barbeque Safety for Dogs

Summer is in full swing. Despite quarantines and social distancing, many of us are trying to enjoy the warm weather as much as possible while we can. Barbeques are always popular at this time of year. They’re also one of Fido’s favorite things! Whether you’re having guests over, or just cooking dinner for the family, be sure to keep your pet’s safety in mind. A local Burlington, ON vet offers tips on barbequing with dogs below.

Food is one of the biggest concerns here. Many of the foods that are popular at barbeques are toxic to our canine companions. Meat on the bone, for instance, is extremely dangerous for dogs. Bones get soft when they are cooked, and can splinter into sharp shards. Other unsafe foods include garlic, onion, scallions, and chives; chocolate; alcohol; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocado (even in guacamole form); dairy products; junk food; caffeine; xylitol; and anything high in salt, sugar, or fat. If you want to give Fido a treat, offer him some cooked, plain, boneless meat, fish, or chicken. A plain burger, hot dog, or brat is fine, as a special snack. Just let it cool first!

Don’t let Fido get too close to grills or fire pits. Dogs and fire are never a good combination!

Fleas and ticks are out in full force at this time of year. These uninvited guests may very well decide to crash your barbeque. Keep up with Fido’s vaccinations and parasite control products.

If you do have people over, make sure no one accidentally leaves a door or gate open. Man’s Best Friend is definitely an opportunist!

Torch oil, bug spray, suntan lotion, lighter fluid, and citronella are all toxic to dogs. Keep these chemicals out of paws’ reach!

Fido is definitely not above going through the trash in search of leftovers. This can be dangerous! Trash may contain things like toothpicks, skewers, bones, can lids, fat trimmings, and tinfoil. Clear the table as soon as everyone has finished eating, and use a garbage can with a lid that closes tightly.

Make sure Fido always has shade and fresh water available. If your canine pal looks hot, take him inside, where it’s cooler, and give him cold water.
