Spring Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners

April 1, 2020

Spring has officially sprung! Many people roll up their sleeves for a good deep cleaning at this time of year. If you have a pet, you may have a few extra chores on your list. Here, a Burlington, ON vet lists some spring cleaning tips for pet owners.

Fur

Many of our furry friends thoughtfully try to share their pretty fur with us at this time of year. Spring is peak shedding time! Use a squeegee, damp sponge, or rubber dish gloves to remove fur from your upholstery. You’ll also want to brush your four-legged pal daily. If you have a dog, brush Fido outdoors, so the extra fur just blows away. Wearing an apron may also help. We also recommend putting slipcovers on your furniture.

Dishes

Go through your pet’s things, and discard anything thing that’s worn out or expired. Wash all your furry buddy’s dishes, gear, and toys. Many stuffed animals can go into the washing machine, as can tennis balls. Rope toys can be soaked with water and microwaved on high for a minute. (Note: remove any metal parts first.) Most rubber and plastic items are dishwasher-safe. Skip the soap: hot water and steam will do the job.

Bedding

Wash your pet’s bedding and blankets. If your furry pal’s bed can’t be machine-washed, vacuum, dry clean, or steam clean it. You may also want to get removable slipcovers that can be washed.

Air Quality

Changing your air filter is a small step that can make a big difference. If you find yourself constantly dealing with fur, you may also want to invest in a good air purifier. This goes double for people with allergies!

Stains

Stains are a fact of life for many pet owners. Even the most well-behaved pet is going to have the occasional accident! Consider getting a steam cleaner. Also, keep an enzyme-based cleaner on hand. (Tip: baking soda and vinegar will work in a pinch.)

Paws For Thought

Spring season means mud season for many people. Trim the hair around Fido’s toes, and keep some pet wipes near the door. Wipe your canine pal’s feet before you bring him in. You may even be able to train him to use a doggy mat to clean his paws.
