6 Great Reasons to Adopt a Senior Pet

November 1, 2019

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! This is one cause that is near and dear to our hearts. Older animals make wonderful pets! Read on as a local Burlington, ON vet offers some advice on adopting a dog or cat in their golden years.

They’re Adorable

We know, baby animals are always adorable. However, dogs and cats in their golden years also have their own charms. A senior dog napping in the sun is heartwarmingly cute, while purrs from older cats are truly special.

They Need Loving Homes

Although senior pets have many great traits, they are unfortunately often overlooked in favor of younger ones. This is very sad, as older dogs and cats are often very frightened and depressed in shelters. Some have been abandoned after a lifetime of love and loyalty. These guys want nothing more than for someone to love or care for them.

They’re Calmer

Puppies and kittens are absolutely adorable, but they’re also a lot of work. Older pets, on the other hand, are much calmer, and tend to spend most of their time napping. They’re also not very prone to mischief, and are more interested in collecting ear scritches than in scratching up your sofa or chewing your shoes. Because they are so calm, they are also a great option for anyone who doesn’t have the energy to keep up with a super playful pet.

Shorter Commitment

When you adopt a kitten or puppy, you’re signing on for over a decade of pet parenting. That’s a pretty hefty commitment! Senior pets don’t have that much time, which can actually be a bonus. If you aren’t sure where you will be five or ten years down the road, an older pet may be a good option for you.

Pre-qualifications

Another good thing about older pets is the fact that they have some prior experience. Older dogs are typically already trained. Senior cats, on the other hand, generally have an idea of what being a good kitty entails.

Sweet Demeanor

Older pets are very sweet and lovable. That distinguished senior dog or cat may very well melt your heart. If you are ready to adopt a new pet, please consider giving a senior pet a great retirement!
