Did you know that October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month? Going to a shelter is a great way to find your new canine buddy! Shelter dogs often make the best pets! They’re typically extremely grateful and affectionate to their saviors, and are full of love and tail wags. Read on as a local Burlington, ON vet discusses adopting a shelter dog.
Adopting from a shelter benefits both people and pets. First and foremost, you’ll be giving that one lucky pooch a new lease on life. You may also save yourself some money: adopting from a shelter is often much cheaper than going through a breeder or pet store. Plus, you’ll be helping the shelter care for other homeless pets, both by freeing up some much-needed space and by helping them financially.
Choosing the right dog isn’t always easy. In some cases, Fido very clearly picks his humans. However, it’s not always that simple. You may find yourself faced with several adorable pooches. Chances are, you’ll want to help all of them. Spend some time with your new canine pal before deciding. Also, remember to keep an open heart. Don’t overlook less adoptable pets, such as senior dogs. They often have a hard time getting adopted, and want nothing more than to find someone to love them.
Make sure to get Fido started out on the right paw in his new life. Before you bring your pup home, you’ll want to go shopping. Your list should contain bedding, toys, treats, dishes, waste baggies, grooming supplies, a leash, a collar or harness, and a crate or carrier.
Fido should meet his new doctor within the first week or so. You’ll need to make sure he’s fixed, microchipped, and current on his vaccines and parasite control. A thorough exam is also in order.
Our canine buddies are adorable, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get into mischief. Make your home safe for Fido by addressing potential dangers, such as toxic plants, plastic bags and wrappers, and anything small or sharp. If you have a fence, make sure it is sturdy, so your pet can’t get over or under it.
