7 Ways To Keep Your Bunny Happy

June 15, 2019

Rabbits are very cute and lovable pets, and can certainly melt some hearts. They do have some specific needs, however, so first-time bunny owners often face a bit of a learning curve. Here, a Burlington, ON vet discusses keeping Floppy content.

Comfy Cage

Inadequate cages are, unfortunately, a fairly common bunny care problem. Rabbits need ample room to hop, jump, stand, and stretch out, without touching the top or sides of their cages. Floppy will also need a little hidey-hole to retreat to when she wants some privacy. Location is important as well. Your pet is part of the family, so she’ll be most comfortable in a quiet spot where she can see and hear you.

Free Time

Make sure Floppy gets enough time out of her cage. We generally recommend that rabbits be allowed out for at least 4-5 hours a day. You’ll need to do some bunnyproofing before letting your furball out to play. Remove, secure, or cover baseboards; furniture legs; wires and cords; medicine; chemicals; toxic plants; plastic bags and ties; personal items; and anything small or sharp.

Chew Toys

Bunnies need plenty of chew toys. Toys provide Floppy with entertainment and stimulation. They also help keep her from developing painful dental issues. This doesn’t have to cost you much: you can make some great DIY toys out of common household items like cardboard and paper.

Health Care

Healthy pets are happy pets! Floppy will need to see the vet regularly. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. You’ll also want to learn about signs of illness to watch for. If you do notice anything wrong, contact your vet immediately.

Box Castle

This one is a great rainy-day project for kids! Get some cardboard boxes, and make Floppy her own little palace. (Your furry pal may eat her castle, but that’s okay.)

Good Food

Proper nutrition is very important! Bunnies need plenty of fresh grass hay, as well as commercial rabbit food and safe produce. As for treats, well, Floppy has a bit of a sweet tooth. Some safe fruit, such as strawberry or banana, is fine on occasion. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Love

Your cute pet will be happiest if she feels loved and safe. Spend time with Floppy every day!
