Tips for Dealing With Shedding Season

March 15, 2019

Spring is just around the corner! With one more long winter in the rear view mirror, many people are looking forward to enjoying some sunshine and warm weather. However, when you start packing away your heavy boots and jackets, you may realize that your furry pal is also discarding their winter coat … and leaving it all over your furniture. Read on as a local Aldershot, ON vet offers some helpful advice on getting through shedding season.

Slipcovers

Slipcovers can really help protect your furniture. Even if you don’t use them all year long, you may want to keep some on your sofas and armchairs until shedding season has passed. Look for machine-washable ones that are easy to get on and off.

Brushing

Brushing your pet daily will help in many ways. First, you’ll be helping your four-legged buddy get rid of dead fur, so they don’t feel hot or itchy. You’ll also be grabbing that hair with a brush before it gets plastered to everything. If you have a dog, take Fido outside to brush him, so the extra fur just blows away. You may also want to wear an apron during your pet’s beauty session.

Pet Fur Removal

A squeegee works really well at getting pet fur off your upholstery. Rubber dish gloves and damp sponges will also do the trick. When it comes to getting fur off your own clothes, a lint roller is your best friend. Pick up a few spare ones, and keep them in your car and/or workplace. If you have a lot of fur to remove, put the clothing item in the dryer with a wet washcloth for a few minutes.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming frequently is always a good idea for people with pets. Do high-traffic areas and your pet’s favorite lounging spots daily. Every week or so, do a more thorough cleaning.

Air Purification

You may want to invest in a good air purifier. Clean, fresh air is always a good thing! If you do have an air purifier, remember to change the filter regularly.

Clothing Choices

Some materials trap fur more than others do. At this time of year, opt for things like denim, rayon, and silk blends, which won’t trap fur.
