Signs Your Cat Needs Emergency Care

December 1, 2018

If there’s one thing we can say about cats, it’s that they are full of cute quirks. However, some of Fluffy’s adorable characteristics can also work against her. For example, cats often try to hide signs of illness. This can be quite dangerous, as you may not know your pet is sick until she’s quite ill! Read on as a Burlington, ON vet lists some signs that your kitty needs to see a vet right away.

Poor Grooming

Most of our feline buddies are very good about taking care of their fur. Fluffy may spend hours grooming herself every day. However, if she isn’t feeling well, she probably won’t be up for her usual routine, and her coat may look greasy, matted, or unkempt.

Vomiting

It isn’t unusual for cats to have the occasional hairball. (These aren’t fun for either Fluffy or her humans, but that’s beside the point.) However, frequent and/or excessive vomiting are huge red flags.

Litterbox Woes

Kitties are usually pretty good about using their litterboxes. If your cat suddenly stops using her litterbox, or seems to be having trouble going, call your vet immediately. These can be signs of some very dangerous medical issues! Diarrhea is also a red flag.

Hiding

This one isn’t always a red flag. Some kitties are naturally timid, and hide whenever the doorbell rings. It also isn’t unusual for Fluffy to take a nap in an out-of-the-way place. However, if your furball refuses to leave her hiding spot, she could be sick.

Uncharacteristic Behaviour

Just like people, cats are all unique individuals. Keep an eye out for anything that isn’t normal for your kitty. For instance, if Fluffy is usually cuddly and sociable, but suddenly starts acting grumpy and withdrawn, she may be ill. You may also notice changes in your cat’s vocalizations.

Changes In Weight

Sudden weight loss or gain can also be a sign that there is something going on with a cat. It isn’t always easy to notice if Fluffy gains or loses a pound. Weighing your cat regularly is a good way to track this.

Respiratory Issues

Coughing, sneezing, wheezing, gasping, and other respiratory issues are also indications that Fluffy needs medical care.

If you notice any of these symptoms—or any other unusual behaviour—in your cat, call us immediately. As your Burlington, ON vet clinic, we’re happy to help!
